The DREAM Houses of 5th graders
By: Ms. Andrea, ACE Teacher
5th grade worked on a project-based activity where they had to design a layout for their dream house while also practicing their multiplication skills. They each had grid paper and a blueprint worksheet where they had to record their dimensions for each room. They had to include a total of 13 rooms; 9 rooms that I assigned to them and 4 they were able to come up with themselves. With each room they had to calculate the total area by finding the length and width. One thing I added to the activity was that I made it a contest; so, the student with the largest area would win ACE Bucks. Knowing that this was a contest student were even more motivated to make sure they exceled in this activity. Once students started working, I could see their creativity start to develop. They even started imagining themselves as architects by asking themselves what the best location and size for their rooms would be. This was a successful activity because its targeted math skills that needed to be worked on and it allowed students to be creative. As a teacher, it made me happy to see them enjoying the activity because I know that this can be something, they will remember doing in ACE for times to come.
