In April, Communities In Schools of North Texas at Hedrick Middle School held the first annual “Girls Night Out” event. 20 girls gathered in my office after school and painted their nails, did their hair, and spent girl time talking without phones and tablets.
We ate a nice dinner together and then went and then went to Lewisville High School to watch the documentary “Finding Kind.” The film is about how girls and women deal with girl on girl bullying and find common ground of kindness and mutual respect. After watching the film, the girls were given the choice to fill out kindness cards, apology cards and self-improvement cards. It was very empowering seeing the girls that attending writing apology cards and kindness cards to each other.
Three courageous girls spoke in front of the entire audience about how they felt when girls were mean to them, and two other girls even apologized to some of the girls that were in attendance that evening. It was a warm feeling to know that the documentary really touched them. The girls were made aware of the impact of how their words and actions could affect others around them.
The girls realized that this was a life commitment they needed to make in order to change the world and by starting with how they treated others. Overall, “Girls Night Out” was really a nice event and the girls can’t wait to have another one. They really enjoyed bonding together as young ladies, getting together to do girl things and learning the importance of being kind to others!
