Tamia is a sophomore student at Denton High School who is going into her second year with CIS. Jessica Mier, CIS Site Coordinator at Denton HS, has been working with Tamia in managing stressors inside and outside of school, which have led her to feel behind in school. This year, one of Tamia’s goals is to expand on her grounding and time management skills. Since being connected with CIS, Tamia has reached out for help and often goes to the CIS room for additional academic help or to talk about things that are going on in her life.
Tamia knows that CIS is a safe space, and she comes into the CIS room whenever she begins to feel overwhelmed. Ms. Mier and Tamia typically take the time to relax and talk about whatever is causing stress. In addition to using grounding skills, Tamia has made an effort to keep her grades up. Tamia comes in for grade checks and works together with Ms. Mier to create a schedule for all her upcoming weekly assignments.
Now that Tamia has learned to identify when she is overwhelmed, she says “I want to make sure that I feel okay so that I can do well in school. I know I can go to CIS for help and will have someone there to listen to me.” Ms. Mier says that seeing Tamia grow and not be afraid to ask for help instead of bottling everything up has been an amazing transformation to see. “I am so proud of the young adult she is becoming and even more honored that she trusts me to be a person she can lean on.”
CISNT believes that every child needs and deserves a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, and Ms. Mier provides just that for her students at Denton HS. We are so proud of Tamia’s progress and look forward to seeing how she continues to grow throughout the rest of the school year!
