UNT Math Tutors Continue to Support CISNT Students Despite COVID-19 Restrictions

The 2020-2021 school year has presented numerous challenges for our students and school staff. One of the largest confines faced by us at CISNT has been our beloved volunteers, who are limited to virtual serving this year. Our partnership with the UNT Math and Education Departments has been successful in helping our students receive free tutoring for six year now and we are so happy to have been able to continue this needed service this school year. Below are just a few of our happy Site Coordinators talking about their gratitude to these wonderful volunteers

“When I first found out that our volunteers would be online only, I had a lot of reservations. I was concerned that the students might not benefit from the experience with it not being in person. However, these UNT math tutors have done such an amazing job adapting to a new way to provide academic support. They have been patient, focused, encouraging, knowledgeable, and a truly invaluable asset to my program and students. Several of my students come and ask if they can work with a math tutor on their own without even being asked to. It’s amazing to see the impact they are having.” Rickey Hayes, Strickland Middle School, Denton ISD

“I am so happy that UNT virtual tutoring has gone better than anticipated! With the help of my AmeriCorps members, we have facilitated five different academic groups that use our UNT volunteers to provide homework assistance and tutoring to seven of our in-person students and three of our virtual students who are learning at home.” Erika Delgadillo, Bridgeport Elementary, Bridgeport ISD

“The students here at Pike enjoy meeting with their tutors online! I have a 6th grade student that comes into the CIS office regularly asking when he is going to meet with Mr. Sonny again because he appreciates all the help that meeting with him individually provides. I also have an eighth grade student  who enthusiastically thanked his tutor after the they helped him finally understand how to solve two-step equations in math. We are so very thankful for all the assistance our UNT tutors provide!” Connie Kim, Pike Middle School, Northwest ISD

“Despite the challenges of this school year, it positive that our UNT Math Tutors and other service learning volunteers have been able to experience a glimpse of what virtual learning and teaching looks like and I’m so proud of our students’ resiliency in adjusting from tutoring in the classroom to virtual meetings.” Aydee Duarte, Lakeland Elementary, Lewisville ISD
