Pictured are three of our 5th grade students at Evers Park Elementary in Denton, TX. Osbaldo, Mary Jane and Leonel have all participated in the Communities In Schools of North Texas Afterschool Centers on Education (CISNT ACE) program for at least 2 years.
One of these students moved to Denton ISD not knowing any English, but the language barrier did not prevent this student from joining the ACE program, building friendships, and diligently learning to speak English fluently, by the following school year.
Osbaldo, Mary Jane and Leonel have two things in common. First, all three students have overcome personal and academic struggle and have been avid participants in our ACE program. Second, all three students placed in an essay competition. The subject of the essay was “Why My School Is the Best.” These students took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
When I stepped into the ACE tutoring group, they rushed over to show me their trophies. They were so proud of their accomplishment. As tired of tutoring as they get, and as much as they ask not to go, their win shows what a difference a caring school with the support of the CISNT ACE program can make in their academics.
