In the two months I have been at Rivera Elementary, I have gotten to know some of the students fairly well. There are some students who are always very excited to see you, and there are others who may not express their emotions quite as much. Ashton is a part of the second group.
Ashton is a second grader who has endured a lot already in his home life. Because of this, he is much more reserved and keeps to himself. However, I have always made it a point to be someone who is excited to see him and acknowledge him whenever I see on campus. As he grew comfortable interacting with me, Ashton became more eager to spend time in my program.
Throughout the month of October, I started meeting a lot more mentors that would soon be starting at Rivera. One mentor in particular, Ms. Jennifer, showed that she had just the right type of personality to allow Ashton to feel comfortable and come out of his shell. The first day she came to mentor, I let her know that there was a good chance she may be doing most of the talking that day.
However, that was not the case at all. As I got them adjusted in my classroom, Ashton and Ms. Jennifer just clicked. Ashton spoke more than I had ever heard and was much more talkative in a one on one situation. Ms. Jennifer’s lively personality brought out a side to Ashton I had never gotten to see before, and it assured me that I made the right match. I look forward to watching their relationship blossom throughout the school year, and I can’t wait to see the impact it will have on Ashton.
