This month I want to brag on one of my University of North Texas service learning volunteers at Central Elementary. Through a partnership with the UNT Department of Mathematics, college students who are enrolled in the “Mathematics for Elementary Education Majors” courses volunteer with Communities In Schools of North Texas to help tutor elementary students in Math.
Juan Hernandez, a UNT Math student, is also an alumni of Central Elementary and still lives in the neighborhood. He currently works with our 4th grade students helping them to strengthen their math skills. He is always here on a consistent basis with a big smile on his face ready to help our kids.
The teacher who Juan works with, has nothing but positive things to say about him. Juan has even mentioned possibly returning to continue to volunteer once he has completed his class requirements.
Communities In Schools is happy to show our students an example of someone who was once in the same place as them, going to college and giving back to their community. I am happy to have Juan on my campus!
