Understanding Math Concepts

David & GiselleI work with an eighth grade student at Hedrick Middle School who was failing math and was very downbeat about her grades. Giselle was very frustrated with school because of her struggles in math. David, a UNT math student, was deployed to my campus in October.

I called Giselle to my office to let her know that I had a math tutor for her, and her eyes lit up. She was very excited to have someone help her understand her math. The first time they met, they studied and went over what she was currently learning in class and reviewed what she had learned weeks before. After the tutoring session, Giselle told me she never felt so good about math, and David helped her understand the concepts. She said she couldn’t wait to retake her math test after figuring out how to solve  the problems and come up with the right answer.

After school that day she went to retake her test and made a 93! Giselle was full of joy. I can’t thank David enough for helping Giselle understand the math concepts and instill a sense of confidence in math that she didn’t have before. The UNT Math Volunteers are making a huge difference in our students’ academic achievement!
