Miss Sally and Madison started meeting together at Hedrick Elementary in the Lewisville Independent School District midway through the last school year, and have continued their mentoring relationship this year.
Madison was referred to Communities In Schools of North Texas by her first grade teachers for having some behavior issues that had been persisting ever since she transferred here last year. Madison is what I like to refer to as a “Spitfire.” She is not afraid to speak her mind, and her honesty can get her into a little bit of trouble throughout the school day.
When Sally, a grandmother of girls around Madison’s age, came into my office for the first time to be paired with a student, I had a “eureka!” moment. Sally also speaks her mind and is able to graciously, yet sternly, steer Madison in the right direction.
Since the two have been matched, it is plain to see that the relationship is having positive effects on Madison, and her teachers have raved about her 180 degree change in behavior since last year. I am excited to see this change take root, and for Miss Sally and Madison’s relationship to continue to grow.
