Incorporating Math Into a Game

MorganToday’s brag goes out to Morgan, a fourth grade student at Rockbrook Elementary in Lewisville ISD. She has been struggling a lot in math, specifically division, so we decided to incorporate math into a game. This allowed for us to have fun and have active learning at the same time.

Our activity involved us playing the game Chutes and Ladders. However the only way both of our players could move on the board was if Morgan was able to correctly solve a division problem. Not only did she get almost every problem right, she picked up on the concept so quickly that she was unstoppable!

We played two rounds, and Morgan made it to the top of the board first each time! It was a super proud moment for Morgan and a great moment for me because I got to witness what originally seemed like such a hard process click with her.

What made the moment magical for me was that I got to witness Morgan share her accomplishment with her mom and saw how proud mom was of her daughter. Mom told me that Morgan used to get frustrated with her math homework each night. Now that’s just one less problem she has to struggle with.
