CISNT Partners with Christ Child Society of Dallas-Fort Worth for Inaugural Literacy Event, “Books in Bloom”

This year, a majority of families did not have plans to travel during spring break, and parents struggled to keep their kids entertained. To keep students engaged in learning during this time, CISNT provided stimulating activities that students could partake in while having a fun and positive break. CIS Site Coordinators and AmeriCorps Members at Central Elementary, Mill St. Elementary, and DeLay Middle School partnered with Christ Child Society of Dallas-Fort Worth to host Books in Bloom, a family literacy event, on March 13th, during the first weekend of spring break.

More than 50 students and 20 families spent the morning moving through ten “stations” that were each dedicated to a specific literacy activity. Volunteers from Christ Child planned and created the stations, which featured creative activities that were fun and educational for both students and parents.  Several of the stations prompted students and parents to engage in “read alouds” of classic tales such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and The Very Hungry Caterpillar,  paired with props and exciting activities related to each book. Students and parents could also play interactive, literature-oriented learning games, such as sequencing story events in the correct order and pairing words with opposite meanings.

Following the completion of all stations, students and families were treated to a free lunch, and given a basket full of take-home activities and games so that the fun and reading could continue at home during the remainder of spring break.

Books In Bloom was a huge success! CISNT students and families had a wonderful time completing the stations, and provided very positive feedback. CISNT would like to extend our thanks to Christ Child Society of Dallas-Fort Worth for partnering with CISNT Site Coordinators and creating a meaningful opportunity for students to engage in their education along with their families!

Thank you for being #AllInForKids!
