College & Career Week 2023

One of Communities In Schools of North Texas’ six core components is College & Career Readiness. CISNT connects students with various services to expand their awareness of college and career opportunities such as career fairs, college tours, presentations, and more. During College & Career Week in April, many of our Site Coordinators spent time highlighting different career paths to follow and colleges to attend.

At Cross Oaks Elementary, CISNT Site Coordinator, Jasmine Owens and her team organized a slideshow featuring herself and other school staff explaining their college experiences, a gallery walk of college graduates with their cap and gowns, students wearing hats or t-shirts of their favorite college, and a fun round of “college bingo”.

Central Elementary CISNT Site Coordinator, Nellie Apodaca arranged activities for all grade levels. For grades Pre-K – 2nd, students participated in “Careers on Wheels”, which is meant to introduce careers that utilize transportation as a matter of safety, such as firefighter, police officer, and coast guard. Meanwhile, for grades 3rd – 5th, students heard about different career paths from various community members and their college experiences.

The college and career readiness fun does not stop there! At Hedrick Middle School, the students conducted interviews with several individuals, including the school resource officer, principal, nurse, PE teacher, and an aviation college student, to learn more about their journeys to their career fields. CISNT Site Coordinator Rita Kruger shares, “The students had a lot of fun conducting the interviews. The videos were edited and presented to the entire Hedrick Middle School during their advisory period. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for both the students and adults.”

More activities included McMath Middle School students creating vision boards and SMART goals to explore their strengths and utilize them in a career that best fits, and Camey Elementary students explored different careers, from Engineers to firefighters and the students engaged with all of the volunteers, and even talked about how to apply for scholarships.

We are so thankful to have Site Coordinators who value the CISNT mission on a daily basis at their campuses! #AllInForKids
