Persevering to Set an Example

This month I would like to brag on Jesus, a sophomore at Lewisville High School Killough who is new to the Communities In Schools. Jesus was recommended to CIS by his teacher for academic support. His main struggle was in his math class. I matched him with one of our volunteer math tutors, Ms. Helen.

At first when Jesus would come to tutoring, he brought a bad attitude along with him. Some days he would not even bring his backpack. I met with Jesus’s father, and he told me that Jesus has three younger brothers at home. They try to encourage Jesus to work hard in school to set a good example for them. I used this information to encourage Jesus to change his attitude, and he apologized for being disrespectful.

Since then, Jesus has made a complete turnaround. He comes to tutoring ready to work, is very kind and respectful to Ms. Helen, and I see his self-esteem starting to increase along with his math ability. Keep pressing forward, Jesus!
