This month I would like to brag on Gavino, a 9th grader at Lewisville High School—Killough Campus in Lewisville, TX. Gavino was recommended to Communities In Schools of North Texas in February by our Response to Intervention (RTI) Coordinator Lindsay Farra for academic readiness needs. He was struggling to pass several of his classes, and had a 3 (out of 100) average in Algebra I.
I sat down with Gavino and we made a Goal Sheet where he shared his dreams of going to college and getting a full-time job. We then talked about how passing math was an important stepping stone to reaching this goal, and even though he thought math was difficult, he would have to buckle down and work hard to bring his grade up.
I paired Gavino with Hayden Stallings, a service learning volunteer. Hayden is studying to be a math teacher and has helped many of my struggling students understand math concepts and pass their classes. Gavino has been meeting with Hayden for two hours each week and has been working hard to complete his homework and master his most difficult subject.
I am happy to report that Gavino’s Algebra I grade has jumped from a 3 to an 86 in two months! He has a new sense of confidence with his school work, and he is working hard to finish the year with all A’s and B’s. Thank you, Hayden, for being a caring adult who is empowering students at LHS—Killough!
