The Positive Impact of Volunteering Virtually

It’s no secret that this school year has started very different for students across North Texas and that is no different for Jeny, an 8th grade student at Delay Middle School in Lewisville ISD. Luckily, she has her CISNT Mentor, Amanda, to help ease the uncertainty of her last year in middle school.

Jeny met with Ms. Amanda for the first time in March 2020, just one week before our school districts closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In September, they resumed where they left off and have continued to meet virtually via supervised meetings on WebEx each week. Ms. Amanda takes advantage of mentoring virtually while at home, and always makes sure her dogs make an appearance during their time together.

CISNT Site Coordinator at Delay Middle School, Tracey Quezada, states: “Witnessing Jeny’s and Ms. Amanda’s strong relationship as mentor and mentee is such a pleasure because of how well they get along and how much they have in common. Although they only met in person once, it is great to see the power of technology and how effective it can be throughout these difficult times. Jeny is an amazing student who thrives to be the best version of herself and it is so heartwarming to know she has a mentor who influences her in all aspects of life.”

Jeny has vocalized to Ms. Quezada how appreciative she is of Ms. Amanda and how much she enjoys their time together. We are excited to see how these two will grow together and impact each other’s lives!
